Field preparation
- The field should be well-leveled and have a good drainage system. Mustard plants are sensitive to standing water, so waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.
- Before sowing, remove all weeds, old plant remains, and crop residues to prevent pest and disease buildup from previous crops.
Irrigation
- Provide critical irrigation during flowering and pod development stages, as water stress at this time can reduce yield and seed quality.
- Avoid overwatering and waterlogging conditions, as excess moisture can cause root diseases and damage the crop.
- Mustard can tolerate drought, but timely irrigation helps achieve higher yield and better oil content.
Harvesting and storage
- Harvest mustard when the pods turn yellowish-brown and become dry. This indicates the seeds are mature and ready for collection.
- Cut the plants early in the morning when there is dew, as moisture helps prevent seed shattering.
- Dry the harvested plants completely under the sun before threshing to avoid fungal infection.
- Clean and grade the seeds properly before storage to maintain quality and avoid spoilage.
Common diseases
- Alternaria Blight
For treatment, use only a pesticide registered in Nepal, at the dose on its label, and ask your local Agriculture Knowledge Centre.
