Field preparation

  • The field should be clean, level, and free from weeds because weeds take away nutrients and affect growth.
  • Avoid planting in waterlogged areas, as standing water can cause the roots to rot and the crop to fail.

Irrigation

  • If there is not enough rainfall, give one light irrigation during the flowering stage to help pod formation.
  • Avoid over-irrigation, as excess water can lead to root rot and fungal diseases.
  • Providing a light irrigation during the pod-filling stage can increase both yield and grain quality.

Harvesting and storage

  • Harvest when the pods turn brown and make a rattling sound when shaken, indicating they are mature.
  • Cut the plants early in the morning when the air is cool to prevent pod shattering and seed loss.
  • After harvesting, dry the plants thoroughly before threshing to prevent mold and spoilage.
  • Store the clean, dry seeds in airtight containers to protect them from moisture and pests.

Common diseases

  • Rust

For treatment, use only a pesticide registered in Nepal, at the dose on its label, and ask your local Agriculture Knowledge Centre.
